Inclusion, Respect and Safety

A Place Where Everyone Belongs

At Mid Wales BJJ, we believe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should be an opportunity for everyone. Regardless of age, background, experience, ability or circumstance, everyone deserves the chance to learn, develop and discover what they are capable of in an environment where they feel safe, respected and welcome.

We want to build more than a martial arts academy.

We want to build a community founded on kindness, mutual respect, encouragement and a shared commitment to helping one another improve.

People come to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for many different reasons. Some want to learn self-defence, improve their fitness or challenge themselves physically. Others are looking for greater confidence, new friendships, a sense of belonging or simply something rewarding to learn.

Whatever brings you through our doors, you will be treated with respect.

You don't need to arrive fit, confident or experienced. You don't need to be the strongest, the quickest or the most naturally talented person in the room. You simply need a willingness to learn.

You belong here.

Respect Is Non-Negotiable

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be challenging. It asks us to step outside our comfort zones, confront our limitations, make mistakes and keep learning. There will be moments of frustration, uncertainty and difficulty. These are all part of the process.

But challenge should never come at the expense of another person's dignity.

We believe that strength is demonstrated not only through physical ability, but through patience, self-control, humility and the way we treat others. Experience and technical ability should be used to help people develop, not to intimidate, belittle or exclude them.

At Mid Wales BJJ, we expect everyone to treat their training partners with consideration and respect. We encourage questions, welcome beginners and recognise that everyone progresses at a different pace. We celebrate one another's achievements rather than competing for status. We help people who are struggling rather than making them feel inadequate. And we understand that the true value of training lies not simply in what we learn to do, but in the people we become along the way.

A Zero-Tolerance Approach to Bullying

Bullying, intimidation, harassment, discrimination and deliberate humiliation have no place at Mid Wales BJJ.

This applies to children and adults, beginners and experienced practitioners, and everyone in a position of responsibility. No one should be made to feel unwelcome, unsafe or inferior because of who they are, how they learn or where they are in their journey.

We will not tolerate behaviour such as:

Ridiculing, belittling or deliberately humiliating another person.

Targeting less experienced or physically smaller training partners.

Discriminatory language, harassment or exclusion based on personal characteristics or background.

Deliberately hurting, intimidating or attempting to frighten another student.

Ignoring a training partner's boundaries, refusal to participate or tap.

Using rank, experience or physical strength to exploit or control others.

Retaliating against anyone who raises a concern in good faith.

We recognise that children and adults sometimes make mistakes, misunderstand one another or need guidance in learning appropriate behaviour. Where appropriate, these situations can be addressed through conversation, education and support.

However, deliberate, repeated or serious misconduct will be taken seriously and may result in removal from a session or exclusion from the academy.

Our responsibility is to the well-being of the whole community. Everyone should be able to train knowing that their safety and dignity matter.

Every Child Deserves to Feel Safe

As an academy welcoming children and young people, we take our responsibility to their welfare seriously.

We want children to experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as something positive: an opportunity to move, play, learn, make friends, develop confidence and discover their own capabilities.

That requires an environment in which children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and trying something unfamiliar without fear of ridicule or humiliation.

We believe in encouragement rather than intimidation, patience rather than pressure, and constructive guidance rather than shame. Children should be supported in developing discipline and resilience without being made to feel that they are somehow inadequate when they struggle.

We also recognise the importance of appropriate boundaries, respectful physical contact and listening to children when they express discomfort or concern.

Parents should feel able to ask questions and raise concerns, confident that they will be listened to and that their child's welfare will be taken seriously.

Our commitment is to provide a positive, appropriately supervised and supportive learning environment, with safeguarding arrangements designed to protect the children and young people entrusted to our care.

Inclusion Means Understanding Individual Differences

No two people learn in exactly the same way.

Some people pick up techniques quickly by watching a demonstration. Others need more explanation, repetition or time to practise. Some thrive in busy group environments, while others may benefit from a quieter approach or additional support as they become familiar with training.

We welcome people of different abilities, personalities, backgrounds and learning styles. We are particularly keen to ensure that neurodivergent children and adults, including autistic people and those with ADHD, know that they are welcome at Mid Wales BJJ.

We understand that people may have different sensory preferences, communication styles, physical abilities and support needs. Wherever reasonably possible, we will work with individuals and families to understand those needs and find practical ways to support their participation.

Inclusion does not mean expecting everyone to do everything in exactly the same way. It means recognising individual differences while helping each person find opportunities to learn, contribute and progress. We cannot promise that every activity or environment will suit every individual perfectly. We can, however, promise to approach people with patience, respect and a genuine willingness to find ways forward.

Safety, Trust & Looking After One Another

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close-contact martial art. Training requires trust, awareness and responsibility. We work with one another to develop skills, and that means recognising that our training partners are people to look after, not obstacles to overcome at any cost.

We expect everyone to train with appropriate control, respect their partner's experience and abilities, follow coaching instructions and recognise the importance of tapping early and responding immediately when a partner taps.

No technique, position or round is worth risking another person's wellbeing through recklessness or ego.

We encourage students to communicate openly, ask for help when they need it and speak up if something doesn't feel right. Nobody should feel pressured to continue an activity that causes concern or discomfort.

Physical safety is essential, but so is emotional safety: the confidence that you can walk onto the mats, learn something new and make mistakes without being ridiculed or deliberately made to feel uncomfortable.

We want everyone to leave training feeling that they have been challenged constructively, treated fairly and supported in their development.

A Community Built Together

A good academy is about much more than the techniques being taught. It is about the relationships formed, the culture created and the way people treat one another when nobody is keeping score. Some of the strongest friendships develop through shared challenges. We learn together, struggle together, help one another improve and celebrate the progress that comes with time and effort. We discover that everyone has something to offer, regardless of their age, experience or ability.

These connections are part of what makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so rewarding. They remind us that personal progress and supporting others are not competing aims. In a good training environment, they go hand in hand. Every member contributes to the atmosphere of the academy. Coaches have a responsibility to lead by example, experienced students have an opportunity to help those who are newer, and every student has a part to play in creating a culture of respect.

We won't always get everything right, and no community is without its challenges. What matters is that we listen, take concerns seriously, learn from experience and remain committed to doing better.

We want Mid Wales BJJ to be a place where people look out for one another, where differences are respected and where everyone can take pride in being part of something positive.

Our Commitment to You

Our commitment is simple.

We will strive to create an environment where people are welcomed without prejudice, treated with dignity and supported in pursuing their goals.

We will not accept bullying as a normal part of martial arts training. We will encourage respectful behaviour, take concerns seriously and expect everyone to contribute to the safety and well-being of the community.

We will recognise that people learn differently, progress at different rates and bring different strengths to the mats. And we will remember that behind every belt, every technique and every training session is a person deserving of respect.

If you are considering joining us for yourself or your child, we welcome your questions. If you have concerns or particular needs, we encourage you to talk to us. You don't need to have everything figured out before taking that first step.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers us an opportunity to become more capable, more confident and more connected to others. We want everyone who trains with us to have the opportunity to experience those benefits.

We train together. We learn together. We look after one another.

Welcome to Mid Wales BJJ
