Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know About Mid Wales BJJ

Whether you're looking for a class for your child, exploring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for yourself, or simply curious about what we do, you'll probably have a few questions. We've answered some of the most common ones below.
If there's anything else you'd like to know, please get in touch. We're always happy to help.

Do I need any previous experience?
Not at all. Our classes will cater for beginners as well as those with some previous experience.
Everyone starts somewhere. We'll introduce techniques progressively, explain the principles behind them and help you build confidence at your own pace.

You don't need to be fit, flexible or particularly strong to begin. Those qualities can develop through training.
What age can children start?
We'll offer classes designed for different age groups, with activities and teaching methods suited to each stage of development.

Most children will be physical enough to start classes at the age of four years. Every child is different. Classes are usually divided up into age groups, as we tend to learn more easily with a training partner of a similar size and weight. Depending on class numbers, classes will be divided into 4 - 7 years, 8 - 12 years and 13 - 16 years.

Our younger classes will use fun games and movement-based activities to develop coordination, balance, body awareness and the foundations of grappling. Older children will build on these skills while learning the fundamental techniques and principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Is BJJ suitable for girls as well as boys?
Absolutely. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone. Technique, timing, balance and leverage are central to the art, and students learn to work with training partners of different sizes, strengths and abilities.

In my opinion, girls can often become significantly better BJJ practitioners because they focus on technical skills over strength. And girls probably have more to gain, overall, because BJJ is one of the few arts where technical skill really will overcome brute force and size.
Is BJJ safe for children?
As with any physical activity, there are risks, but training can be structured to make safety a priority.

Children will learn through age-appropriate games, drills and carefully supervised practice. We'll emphasise control, respect for training partners, listening to instructions and understanding when to stop.

Children will never be expected to do more than is appropriate for their age and experience. Our aim is to help them develop confidence and skill while learning to look after themselves and one another.
Will I and/or my child learn self-defence?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be a valuable part of learning practical self-defence. It teaches children and adults how to manage physical contact, maintain balance, escape from difficult positions and respond when someone tries to grab or control them.

Just as importantly, we'll encourage awareness, confidence, restraint and sensible decision-making. Self-defence is not about looking for a fight; it's about understanding how to protect yourself and make good choices.
Is BJJ suitable for neurodivergent children or adults?
Yes. Many aspects of BJJ may appeal to neurodivergent people, including its structured learning, practical problem-solving, repetition and opportunities to develop body awareness and confidence.

Every person is different, so we'll aim to understand individual needs rather than make assumptions about what someone can or cannot do. Where possible, we'll work with students and their families to help them feel comfortable and supported.

You can read more on our Neurodiversity & Autism page, or contact us before attending if you'd like to discuss any particular needs or concerns.
I'm nervous about starting. Is that normal?
Very normal! Walking into a new environment and trying something unfamiliar can feel daunting, especially if you've never trained in a martial art before.

You won't be expected to know anything when you arrive. We'll explain what to do, help you find your feet and give you time to become comfortable.

There's no need to prove yourself or keep up with anyone else. Everyone has their own starting point, and learning is a process.
Am I too old to start BJJ?
Definitly not. Adults begin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a wide range of ages and for all sorts of reasons: fitness, self-defence, curiosity, personal development or simply wanting to try something new.

Most BJJ academies and clubs have a wide range of members. Goals change, and with them, your BJJ changes too. Plenty of people start BJJ in their 40s, 50s and 60s. It's much more about your mind.

Training can be adapted to different levels of experience and physical ability. You can progress at a sensible pace, concentrating on technique, movement and gradual improvement rather than trying to match someone else's journey.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first session, comfortable sports clothing will be suitable, provided it has no zips, hard fastenings or anything that could catch or injure a training partner.
Please bring water and arrive in clean clothing with short fingernails and toenails. Most people have a shower before class, so your training partner will have a pleasant experience. And obviously you'll be happier if your training partner is clean and sweet-smelling too.

Do I need to buy a BJJ uniform?
Some BJJ training takes place in a traditional uniform called a gi, while other training is done in a rash guard and grappling shorts or leggings, often called no-gi.

Mid Wales BJJ is a Gi based academy. So you will need to buy one, as soon as you are sure you want to commit to training. You will find a gi will enhance your training, as it allows a full range of grips and techniques. Most people buy a gi after two or three classes. Some people buy one before the first class.

Some academies require you to buy their own gi. Others prefer you to only wear white gis. Mid Wales BJJ gives you the freedom to express yourself and your personality in whatever colour and brand of gi that your prefer. There are dozens of well-known companies online, and gis to suit every budget. Have fun and wear a gi that makes you feel good.

What happens in an adult class?
Classes will combine movement and warm-up activities with technical instruction, drilling and, where appropriate, supervised grappling practice.

We'll break techniques down into manageable stages, explain how they work and give you opportunities to practise with a partner. As your experience grows, you'll learn how individual techniques connect and how to apply them in live training.

Beginners and intermediate students will be supported as they develop their understanding and confidence.

What makes Mid Wales BJJ different?
We want to offer more than a place to learn techniques. Our aim is to build a friendly, welcoming academy where people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities can learn, improve and enjoy the process.

Our teaching philosophy emphasises clear instruction, patience, humour, mutual respect and steady progress. We believe training should be challenging without being intimidating, disciplined without being joyless, and serious about learning without taking ourselves too seriously.

Above all, we want people to feel that they belong.

If we aren't laughing while we are training, we are doing something wrong!
Where are classes held, and when do they take place?
Class times and academy location will be confirmed no less than eight weeks before we open. We are aiming to have classes on one weekday evening and one weekend morning. Plus there is the possibility of daytime classes during the week, depending on demand.
How much do classes cost?
Training and tuition fees will be confirmed as soon as a venue is secured.

We aim to be affordable for everyone.
Can I come along and watch before joining?
Absolutely. Come along and watch a class.

If you're unsure whether BJJ is right for you or your child, get in touch. We'll explain what to expect and discuss the best way to experience a class before making a commitment.
Do you offer a free trial class?

Do something your future self will love you for!
