Our Story
A Different Kind of Martial Arts Academy

Mid Wales BJJ was born from a simple idea: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has something valuable to offer everyone, and we wanted to bring that opportunity to our community here in Mid Wales.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is far more than a martial art. It is a discipline that challenges us to think, adapt, persevere and grow. It teaches us that strength isn't simply about physical power, that progress comes through patience and practice, and that some of our greatest lessons emerge when things don't go according to plan.

These are lessons that extend far beyond the mats.

Our Philosophy

At Mid Wales BJJ, our aim is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where children and adults can learn, develop and discover their potential.

For children, that means building confidence, coordination, resilience and self-belief through movement, play and structured learning. We want young people to experience the satisfaction of learning something difficult, the value of perseverance and the importance of treating others with respect.

For adults, it means developing a deeper understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, improving physical fitness, learning practical self-defence and enjoying the lifelong process of refining a skill.
We believe in teaching the full art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - not simply preparing people for competition. Competition has its place, but BJJ has so much more to offer: technical understanding, intelligent movement, problem-solving, composure under pressure and the confidence that comes from developing genuine ability.

More Than Martial Arts

One of the most valuable things Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers is something that has little to do with technique: genuine human connection.

As we get older, life can become increasingly full of responsibilities. Work, family and the demands of everyday life can leave less time for friendships, and for many men in particular, opportunities to form close, meaningful bonds become fewer. We might know plenty of people, yet have relatively few places where we feel part of something, where we can share a challenge, laugh at ourselves, learn alongside others and build friendships that go beyond the surface.

A good BJJ academy can offer exactly that. There is something distinctive about learning a difficult skill together. You struggle, make mistakes, help one another improve and gradually discover what you're capable of. You learn to trust your training partners, to support them in their progress and to celebrate their achievements as well as your own. Everyone starts somewhere, everyone has something to learn, and everyone experiences days when things don't quite go to plan.

Over time, these shared experiences create real bonds. You become more than a group of people who happen to attend the same class. You become training partners, friends and part of a community, connected by the effort you've put in together and the respect you've developed for one another.

This is something I've experienced personally, and it's one of the things I value most about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The friendships formed on the mats can become an important part of life beyond them. They give us a reason to turn up, people to share the journey with and a sense of belonging that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

We want Mid Wales BJJ to be that kind of place: somewhere people can challenge themselves, build lasting friendships and become part of something positive. A place where the benefits of training extend well beyond physical fitness and self-defence, enriching our lives through connection, camaraderie and a shared love of learning.

Learning Together

We believe that a good academy is about more than the techniques being taught. It's about the culture created on the mats.

We want Mid Wales BJJ to be a place where people feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, supporting one another and progressing at their own pace. A place where experience is shared, differences are respected and everyone has something to learn.

There is no need to arrive fit, confident or experienced. Those things can develop through the journey itself. Our vision is to build something positive for Mid Wales: an academy where people of different ages and backgrounds can discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, form friendships, challenge themselves and carry the benefits of their training into everyday life.

This is the beginning of that journey, and we're looking forward to sharing it with you.
